Galaktion Tabidze was a highly influential poet in the 20th century. He survived Stalin’s Great Purge, which claimed the lives of many of his fellow writers, friends, and relatives. However, he faced immense pressure from the Soviet authorities and eventually fell into depression and alcoholism. He was later placed in a psychiatric hospital in Tbilisi, where he tragically took his own life. Despite his struggles, he is still known as “The King of Poets” and continues to inspire generations of poets and remains beloved by the public in Georgia.
