**Gas Crisis Hits Transnistria**
A major crisis is unfolding in the pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria. The area, which has a strong Russian army presence, was getting its gas supplies through Ukraine. However, this changed on January 1, 2025.
**Heating and Gas Disruptions**
The local gas transport company “Tiraspoltransgaz” announced mass gas shutoffs affecting heating plants, houses, and apartment buildings with autonomous heating systems. This means that many residents are now without heat and hot water. Only cooking purposes will be allowed, but even this will soon come to an end.
**450,000 Affected**
The disruption affects approximately 450,000 people in the Russian-backed separatist region. The crisis was triggered by Ukraine’s cessation of Russian gas transit on January 1. The Russian gas giant Gazprom also cited “unfulfilled payment obligations” for stopping gas supplies to Moldova.
**Leaders React**
Transnistria’s leader, Vadim Krasnoselsky, claimed the region was prepared for the situation, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described it as “one of Moscow‘s greatest defeats.” He called on Europe to support Moldova during this energy transformation period. Moldova has declared a 60-day energy emergency state since December 16th.
