Getty ImagesA displaced Palestinian in Gaza told the BBC the house where the former Hamas chief was killed was his home 15 years ago before he fled in May. Yahya Sinwar was killed on Wednesday by Israeli troops. The Israeli military released drone video that they said showed Sinwar inside a partially-destroyed house before he died. Mr Abo said on BBC Arabic’s Gaza Lifeline, that he left his Rafah home on 6 May when Israel ordered evacuations. He had not heard anything about his house until this week. He said he didn’t initially believe her until his brother confirmed that the house was his. “I was like, ‘yes, this is my home’ and I saw pictures and here I am shocked”, said Mr Abo Taha. He said that he did not know why Sinwar was at the house or how he arrived. He said that he and his brothers and sons had nothing to do with it. The BBC verified that the pictures and videos of Mr Abo Taha’s home matched images of the house where Sinwar died. BBC Verify compared images of the home’s window archways and external decorations on doors, shelves, and chairs from the footage. The BBC cannot independently confirm that Mr Abo Taka owns the home. Many people were forced to move a second or even third time after being displaced in other parts of Gaza. Mr Abo Taha said that he built his Rafah home himself with his siblings. He said it cost 200,000 shekels, or PS41,400, and was in good condition before he left. “These are memories, because some of these were bought by my mother and are very precious to us,” he said. “What happened saddened me greatly, the house I built and my payments are all gone,” he said.
