**Russia Reduces Gas Flow Through Ukraine**
Gazprom, Russia’s gas giant, has started reducing the amount of gas it sends through Ukraine. This comes as the current deal between Russia and Ukraine is set to expire.
On December 31st, Gazprom cut its daily gas supply through Ukraine by almost 5 million cubic meters. This was from 42.4 million to 37.2 million cubic meters. The Ukrainian energy grid operator confirmed that Gazprom has not booked any transit capacity for January 1st.
**Deal Expires and New Talks Fail**
The deal between Russia and Ukraine is set to expire on December 31st, 2024. Ukraine says it will not allow Russian gas to flow through its pipes after this date. Despite talks, a new deal could not be reached. This means that Russia’s oldest gas route to Europe is coming to an end.
**Impact on Europe**
Experts say the change will have little impact on Europe’s gas market. The European Union has been preparing for this by finding alternative gas suppliers over the past two years. Slovakia and Austria have already found new gas suppliers, while Hungary will still get Russian gas through a different route.
Moldova might struggle to find new supplies, but overall, Europe is prepared for the switch.
