**Changes Made to High Council of Justice Law**
The Georgian Dream (GD) parliament has proposed changes to the law that will give its MPs more power over the appointment of members to the High Council of Justice (HCoJ).
Under current rules, HCoJ members are appointed through a competitive procedure. But if the proposed amendments are passed, at least seven GD MPs will be able to nominate candidates for the role. The one-party parliament can then appoint them.
The High Council of Justice is responsible for overseeing the judiciary in Georgia. It has 15 members, with six being non-judge positions. These are currently appointed by the President and Parliament, which is controlled by the GD party.
