Far-right Romanian Calin Georgescu has some alarming comments about Ukraine. In an interview published on January 29, he called Ukraine a “fictional state” and said that its eventual partition is “inevitable”.

Georgescu suggested that Romania could claim some of Ukraine’s , including the regions of Northern Bukovina, Budjak, and Transcarpathia. He also implied that Poland would annex the city of Lviv.

This is not the first time a Romanian politician has made such comments. Others have also suggested annexing parts of Ukraine’s territory in the wake of ‘s war with Ukraine.

**Background**

Georgescu achieved a shock success in Romania’s in November 2024, making him a front-runner for the second round. However, his results were annulled by the constitutional court due to alleged and a hybrid campaign on TikTok meant to prop up Georgescu.

Despite this, he remains the leading candidate for the rescheduled vote in May with 38% of projected support.

**Context**

There are an estimated 150,000-500,000 ethnic Romanians living in Ukraine, concentrated in the border regions. However, Romania’s current leadership has been staunchly -Ukrainian throughout the full-scale war, providing military aid and facilitating the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products.
