Svetitskhovloba is a national holiday celebrated in Georgia on October 14. It is dedicated to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (the Living Pillar Cathedral) located in Georgia’s historic town of Mtskheta. The festival is also known as Mtskhetoba, which celebrates the day of Mtskheta.
Special religious services are held at churches across Georgia on this day.
The cathedral has been the burial place of kings for centuries. The current cross-in-square was built between 1010 and1029 by medieval Georgian architect Arsukisdze. However, the site itself dates from the early fourth-century.
Svetitskhoveli, a masterpiece of the Early Middle Ages and High Middle Ages is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is the second largest church building in Georgia after the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
