Representatives of the European Union in Georgia, on behalf of the Directorate General for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission, alerted that the country was set to lose EUR 121.3 Million in EU aid because of its democratic decline. The remaining funds will be put on hold.
The report stated that the transfer of 2023-2024 monetary assistance has been suspended due to the reversal of democratic standards in Georgia. It placed special emphasis on the “Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence,” which undermines civil society and the media‘s freedom. In response, the allocated aid money – EUR 12 million in 2022, EUR 73 million in 2023, and EUR 37,3 million in 2024 – has been frozen.
