Two Georgian citizens were recently taken into custody by Russian occupation forces near the village of Mejvriskhevi in the Gori municipality. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, which have been exacerbated by the presence of barbed wires and other barriers along the occupation line.
The State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) has taken immediate action by activating the “hot line” operated by the EU Monitoring Mission and informing the Geneva International Discussions Co-Chairs and international partners. However, the SSSG also emphasizes that the responsibility for these illegal detentions and other destructive acts in the occupied territories lies with the occupying power.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Georgia in its efforts to reclaim its occupied territories and ensure the safety and security of its citizens. The current government must take stronger measures to address these issues and work towards a peaceful resolution with the occupying power.
