Georgian Party Starts Impeachment Process Against President
The Georgian Dream party has announced that it will start an impeachment process against the country’s president, Salome Zurabishvili. The chairman of the party, Irakli Kobakhidze, said this is their constitutional duty to address what they see as a violation of the Constitution.
Kobakhidze claims President Zurabishvili has violated the Constitution by making several foreign visits without government approval. According to Georgian Dream’s interpretation of the law, only the government can make decisions on international policy.
The party wants to collect signatures from members of parliament and file a submission with the Constitutional Court. This process requires support from at least 50 deputies, or one-third of the entire parliament.
However, experts believe that this move may be an attempt to divert attention away from other important issues in Georgia.
The outcome will depend on the collaboration between the ruling party and the opposition.
