Irakli Garibashvili, Georgian Prime Minister, met Kelly Degnan – US Ambassador to Georgia.
The conversation focused on the key directions of Georgia and US strategic partnership in a variety areas, including security cooperation. It also addressed global challenges presented by COVID-19 as well as the process of vaccination.
The Prime Minister welcomed that USCGC Hamilton (WMSL 753) was pulling into Batumi. He stressed that this visit demonstrated the importance of Black Sea for Euro-Atlantic Security and bolstered both security cooperation as well as regional peace and stability.
The parties stressed the importance of rapid vaccines and joint efforts to effectively combat the pandemic.
“This was a great opportunity to discuss many of the topics on our agenda with Prime Minister Garibashvili. We are already working with the Government on a number of issues of importance, including the COVID response, and the vaccine rollout. We hope that Georgians will get vaccinated. In the United States, we have had great success. Over 55% adult population of the United States is now vaccinated. My teens and I have both been vaccinated. We see that this is how we can reopen economies, reopen schools, and bring life back to normal. It was a pleasure to speak with the Prime Minister on this subject. We also discussed the security agenda, and many other issues that we are working on. Hamilton, a coast guard cutter, is visiting Batumi. I will be there tomorrow for a ship visit. We are always thrilled when US Navy ships can visit Georgia. They love to come to Georgia. I’m looking forward to welcoming CGC Hamilton on Wednesday. They have been training with the Georgian Coast Guard. I am very impressed by what the Georgian Coast Guard can do, its level of capabilities, and its professionalism. Kelly Degnan, after her meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, said that she was delighted to continue working with Georgia in the security sector.
Rian Harris, Deputy Chief of the Mission, attended the meeting.
