Georgia’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Resigns Over EU Accession Efforts Halt
Otar Berdzenishvili, Georgia’s ambassador to Bulgaria, has resigned. This decision comes after the Georgian Dream leadership announced that it is halting the country’s efforts to join the European Union until 2028.
Berdzenishvili expressed his opposition to the decision on social media. He said that he had spent over two decades working on Euro-Atlantic integration and building strong partnerships with allies, particularly the United States. Berdzenishvili felt that these efforts should not be undermined or compromised by the government’s decision.
Other Georgian ambassadors have also spoken out against the halt in EU accession efforts. Tarash Papaskua, Georgia’s ambassador to South Korea, expressed solidarity with protesters on social media. He said that now is a time when Europe and NATO are needed more than ever before, especially considering Russia’s actions in Ukraine and its attempts to undermine global security.
This move follows another recent resignation from the Foreign Ministry. Gocha Javakhishvili, Georgia’s ambassador to France, resigned over the adoption of a Russian-style law regulating foreign agents. The discontent within the ministry has grown significantly since then, with many diplomats publishing a joint statement distancing themselves from the government’s decision.
Currently, 113 Georgian diplomats have signed this statement.
