According to Georgia’s Central Election Commission, the pro-Russian ruling Georgian Dream has claimed victory at the 26 October parliamentary election, having secured more than 54% votes. The results are a significant departure from the pre-election polls as well as opposition exit polls.
The ruling Georgian Dream Party is trying to cement the pro-Russian policy of the country, which it has pursued ever since it came into power. The has suspended contact with Georgia after the government adopted Russian-style laws on “foreign agents”, “family values”, and “foreign agents”. This has halted the country’s path towards EU membership.
According to polls conducted before the election, Georgian Dream would receive % of the votes, and the combined pro-European parties were expected to secure a majority in parliament. The polls showed that:
