Georgia can do what it wants but it cannot join the European Union and do it at the same time – this was the response of the German ambassador in Georgia, Peter Fischer to the provisions adopted by the European Council regarding Georgia on October 17.
“This is the official stance of the European Union towards Georgia, adopted on 17 October by the European Council. This is our final decision making body for the enlargement to the European Union. If you’re worried about this issue, read and understand the following words. Georgia can do anything it wants. Georgia can do whatever it wants, but it cannot join the EU and do what it wants. Fisher wrote: “You decide.”
In its decision yesterday, the European Council – which brings together the leaders from the 27 EU member countries – stated that it was “still seriously worried about the course of actions of the Georgian Government” and noted that “such an action threatens Georgia’s European path and stops de facto the EU accession proces.”
