**German Defense Minister Visits Kyiv to Discuss Aid**
Germany‘s Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, arrived in Kyiv on January 14. He met with Ukrainian officials to discuss further military aid.
Pistorius said it was important for him to show that Germany is still supporting Ukraine despite the ongoing Russian aggression. “We are not alone,” he said. “But together with five countries and many other allies.”
Germany has been a major donor of military aid to Ukraine, providing over 8 billion euros in 2024. However, the country’s budget for 2025 only includes half of that amount.
**Shift in German Policy Possible**
Germany is heading towards snap elections on February 23. The opposition alliance CDU/CSU is leading the polls and threatening to oust Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This could lead to a shift in Germany’s policy, including its military aid to Ukraine.
The timing of Pistorius’ visit is critical as Russia holds the upper hand on the battlefield in Ukraine. Additionally, Donald Trump‘s imminent return to the White House may lead to a decreased US involvement in the war.
