The German Air Force announced on October 16 that the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of Germany were scrambled because a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft was flying over the international waters in the Baltic Sea.
These incidents are common in the region as Russia is suspected to be using the aircraft for spying on the positions of the alliance.
The Russian aircraft, which was flying without a flightplan and with its communications turned off, reportedly landed in an area between Rugen, Germany, and Bornholm, Denmark.
According to Deutsche Welle, two Eurofighter jets responded by taking off from the Rostock Laage airfield located in northeastern Germany. They were “establishing a visual connection” with the Russian reconnaissance aircraft. The German Air Force reported that the German jets “escorted” the Russian reconnaissance aircraft above the Baltic Sea.
In late September, NATO jets intercepted six more Russian aircraft in two days. In August, German and Swedish fighters scrambled to intercept another Il-20 aircraft.
Deutsche Welle reported that over the past two-year period, allied plans have been lifted in average every three to five weeks to intercept Russian aircraft.
The move was made after Russia and China blocked monitoring activities at United Nations. In March, Moscow vetoed a renewal of the panel of U.N. experts monitoring sanctions against Pyongyang for its nuclear and missile programs.
