Annalena Bärbock, the German Foreign Minister, arrived in Kyiv Nov. 4, marking her eighth trip to Ukraine. She was there as a sign of support for a besieged nation. Baerbock told Reuters that she would counter this brutality by showing humanity and support to help Ukrainians not only survive winter but also to save their country. The German minister will meet with her Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha and President Volodymyr Zelensky. Her visit comes at a time when Ukraine is bracing for what could be the harshest winter in the war. The Ukrainian energy grid has been badly damaged by Russia’s massive air campaigns in 2022-23, and in spring and summer 2024. As temperatures drop, new attacks on infrastructure are expected. Germany has played a crucial role in providing energy assistance to Ukraine and bolstering its air defenses to repel further attacks.
