Germany’s Foreign Minister Wants a Debate on Suspending Georgia’s EU Accession Process.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock wants to have a formal talk about stopping Georgia’s process of joining the European Union. She says that Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, is becoming more authoritarian. Baerbock mentioned several problems in Georgia, such as unfair elections, violence against protesters, and laws against LGBTQI+ people.
Baerbock said that instead of getting closer to the EU, Georgia has gone backward. She thinks that the leaders of Georgian Dream are not interested in helping their country join the EU. Baerbock called on the leaders to fix the problems and regain trust from their people.
Germany is worried about what’s happening in Georgia. They have stopped giving money for development projects in the country, and they don’t want to sign any new loan agreements. The German ambassador said that foreign investors are getting scared away because of the situation in Georgia.
Baerbock wants to talk with other EU countries about what to do next. She thinks that they might need to make some tough decisions, such as ending visa-free travel for Georgian leaders or even giving them targeted sanctions.
