**Germany Returns Rare Ukrainian Films to Ukraine**
The Federal Archives of Germany have given nine important Ukrainian films to the Dovzhenko National Center in Ukraine. These films show a critical time in Ukraine’s history from 1919 to 1940.
These projects aim to restore Ukraine’s cultural heritage, especially after the conflict with Russia. The initiatives include returning stolen artifacts, preserving cultural heritage, and enhancing cultural sovereignty.
The Federal Archives of Germany worked with Ukrainian archivists to identify and digitize these rare films. They transferred a hard drive containing the nine films to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
**What’s in the Collection?**
The collection includes three feature films, one short film, two animated films, and three documentaries. These films give us insights into Ukraine’s fight for independence and Soviet rule from the 1930s and 1940s.
Ukrainian officials say these films fill gaps in their cultural history of the 1920s and 1930s. They believe this collection will help protect and nurture Ukrainian culture.
**Notable Films**
Some notable works include a documentary about Bolshevik atrocities during the civil war and a children’s film from 1932, which was previously thought to be lost. These films show unvarnished brutality and give us a sense of Ukraine’s cultural identity.
The transferred films represent a remarkable preservation of historical memory in Ukraine. They are now available for online viewing on the Federal Archives of Germany’s website.
