**Germany Rejects Russian Gas Delivery**
The German Economy Ministry has told its state-operated gas import terminal not to accept a delivery of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). This decision comes as European countries try to replace Russian energy imports and impose sanctions on Russian gas.
According to the Financial Times, the ministry instructed the Deutsche Energy Terminal to reject LNG deliveries from Russia until further notice. The order was made after receiving notice that the facility was expecting a shipment in the coming days.
Germany built its own LNG import terminals to receive gas shipments by sea after Russia cut pipeline gas supplies to EU countries following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Germany had been Europe’s largest importer of Russian gas, but has since been trying to find alternatives.
The ministry’s goal is to make the country independent of Russian gas. While Germany no longer imports Russian LNG directly, it still trades with Russia through a long-term contract with the Yamal facility.
**Sanctions Against Russian Gas**
The European Union imposed its first major restrictions on Russian gas, including LNG, in June. The sanctions package was part of efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy imports and impose penalties on Russia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has suggested replacing Russian LNG with more imports from the U.S. She made this proposal in a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump shortly after his victory.
