**Germany Seizes Russian Tanker in Baltic Sea**
The German government has taken control of a tanker ship that was stranded in the Baltic Sea. The ship, called Eventin, is connected to Russia‘s “shadow fleet,” which are oil tankers used to transport oil above a price cap set by the EU and US.
**Why was the tanker seized?**
The Eventin had been anchored off the coast of Ruegen since mid-January and was sailing from Russia to Egypt. The German government seized it because of concerns about an oil spill and to send a message to Russia that they will not allow their oil shipments through the Baltic Sea.
**What is the shadow fleet?**
Russia’s shadow fleet refers to old oil tankers that are not insured. They are used to transport oil above a price cap set by the EU, US, and G7 countries in December 2022. This is an attempt to cut Moscow‘s fossil fuels revenue.
**How much is the tanker worth?**
The Eventin was carrying around 100,000 tons of crude oil worth over €40 million ($43 million). Germany now owns the vessel and its cargo.
