Germany’s Finance minister suggests revising the legal status and benefits of Ukrainian refugees

German magazine Wirtschaftswoche reported that German Finance Minister Christian Lindner proposed a reevaluation of the legal status for Ukrainian refugees.
Lindner, in an interview with the outlet suggested lowering welfare payments for those receiving benefits and increasing employment.
Lindner said that Ukrainians shouldn’t automatically qualify for the higher Burgergeld payments. These payments are usually for residents, and cover social and economical needs, even if they are not employed.
He recommended that instead, benefits aligned more closely with asylum seekers be offered, along with tools for labor market integration.
Lindner said, “They shouldn’t automatically receive Burgergeld.”
Recently, German officials have been debating the topic of benefits for Ukrainian migrants.
