Election Chief Speaks Out on OSCE Report
Gia Volski, First Vice Speaker of Parliament, has spoken to journalists about the recent OSCE/ODIHR report on the October 26 parliamentary elections. He stated that the conclusion of the report does not meet any criteria for holding new elections.
Volski pointed out that the OSCE/ODIHR report praised the elections as competitive and well-administered. He also said that if there were instances of intimidation or bribery, they would have been mentioned in the report. The opposition’s allegations were also found to be unsubstantiated.
Opposition “Clutching at Straws”
Volski believes that the opposition is trying to hold onto their claims. He stated that while there are some issues that cannot be agreed upon, a consultation on the results will show that the OSCE/ODIHR report has already addressed these matters.
A major point of disagreement between the government and opposition is the role of the Central Election Commission (CEC). Volski believes that making decisions dependent on a two-thirds majority would lead to deadlock. If the CEC were not approved by the opposition, it would remain in a “sabotage mode”.
Trust Deficit
Volski acknowledged that there is a trust deficit between the government and opposition. However, he believes this deficit is often caused by political interests rather than the actual situation. He noted that Georgia is a European country with a significant portion of the population supporting European integration.
