Giorgi Bachiashvili, a close partner of Bidzina Ivanishvili and his former finance manager, has escaped arrest. This is according to Gigi Tsereeteli, a leader of the opposition party “United National Movement.”
Tsereeteli believes that Bachiashvili’s escape was not surprising. He says that the country has many weak points, especially in state services where people have internal protests against corruption.
“He knows a lot and will probably reveal more that may not be liked by ‘Georgian Dream‘ and probably not by Bidzina Ivanishvili either,” Tsereeteli said in an interview on PalitraNews.
Tsereeteli thinks that Bachiashvili’s case is just one example of many weak points in the country. He also believes that people who work in state services are unhappy with corruption and may be helping individuals like Bachiashvili to escape or evade arrest.
The opposition politician also spoke about local government elections. In his opinion, every party should participate in these elections to test themselves. However, he thinks it would be pointless for the opposition parties to take part under the current conditions, as they are dominated by the ruling “Georgian Dream” party.
“Under this government, it won’t happen because these people have one goal: to create comfort, extend their term in power, and think about what will please Ivanishvili,” Tsereeteli said.
Tsereeteli suggested that two elections could be held together – one for the local governments and another for the parliament. This would allow for a more constructive process in the country. However, he believes this is unlikely to happen under the current government.
