Georgia’s relationship to Trump depends on how we behave, and how willing we are, as Giorgi Margvelashvili said in “360 degrees”, a program of “PalitraNews”. Giorgi Margvelashvili’s response to the US presidential elections and Donald Trump’s victory was this.
Margvelashvili believes Donald Trump is an honest politician who appreciates real effort.
“I’ve dealt with the Trump and Obama Administrations, I’ve dealt with Biden and I can tell you that Donald Trump, based upon his biography and his actions in politics, is a very realist politician. The attitude towards Georgia will remain bipartisan. I do not know how actively President Trump will deal with this issue, but given the current Russian environment, these are important issues. Georgia’s relationship to Trump is entirely dependent on how we act and how willing we are to fight and work for our values. He is a very realistic politician, who looks at the real processes and does not look at “fake” processes. We will be the most important call on his agenda.
It doesn’t matter if it is dramatic or not. The support of Georgia is unambiguous, regardless of who is in the Oval Office. It is the support for the democracy of Georgia. This is because of the credit that Georgia has given to America, and the credit Georgia has given to Georgia. The most significant accomplishments have been made by our women and male soldiers, those who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, and stood with Americans. Their service and work, and unfortunately, their blood, are also undefined because it is important to Americans. It matters who stood alongside them on the battlefield.
This view excludes a radical policy change – they support Georgian democracy and the Georgian people. Georgia has neither diamonds nor oil. They support the Georgians who want real democracy. Margvelashvili stated that this will not change. However, if we discuss the types of presidents, and what they value, I can tell from my experience that Trump values real efforts and real issues.
The fourth president also spoke of the expected policy of Trump’s administration towards Georgia in light of the fact the country signed an economic cooperation agreement with the Chinese government.
According to him the economic cooperation between Georgia, China, and the United States is not a concern for the United States. However, it may be the case that China has strategically boosted its capabilities in Georgia by using the port of Anaklia.
“Our cooperation with China’s government was not signed up until now.” I will remind you about Prime Minister Kvirikashvili’s successful cooperation with China when tax-free economic collaboration was signed with this nation, and then America did not complain in this regard. Our American partners are not complaining about the trade with China or the establishment of profitable economic cooperation. But when it comes to China strengthening its strategic capabilities in Georgia there may be some questions. The rapprochement with Russia and Iran is much more problematic.
Margvelashvili stated that Georgia has neither gained an ally nor adversary with Trump’s presidency. Instead, it has the opportunity to be a key player in President Trump’s agenda. Otherwise, nothing globally has changed.
