Former Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze denies any Western involvement in Georgia’s military actions during the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili. This was stated by Vashadze while being questioned by Tea Tsulukiani, head of a parliamentary commission investigating the activities of the United National Movement government.
Tsulukiani asked if Saakashvili‘s actions were driven by madness or an externally dictated plan to dismantle Georgia and hand over territories to Russia. She pointed out that during his presidency, Saakashvili had engaged in militaristic rhetoric and refused to reconcile with citizens living beyond the dividing line between Georgia and Russia-controlled territories.
Vashadze responded that he did not know what motivated Saakashvili’s statements or actions. However, he stated that it was “absolutely impossible” for someone from the West to have told Saakashvili to engage in a military adventure. Vashadze emphasized that, as a diplomat and citizen of Georgia, he had access to high-quality information about Russia’s proxy war against Georgia.
Tsulukiani asked Vashadze if he would be willing to listen to a recording of one of Saakashvili’s statements from 2006-2007. The statement was said to have been made by Saakashvili while wearing military attire, urging everyone to dress like him and fight. Tsulukiani suggested that this might indicate an externally dictated plan.
Vashadze replied that he did not know what motivated Saakashvili’s statements or actions, but stated that it was impossible for someone from the West to have been involved in a military adventure. He also emphasized that Russia had never sought an equal relationship with sovereign Georgia and had instead driven by imperialist interests since the 1990s.
