Georgia to Ban Masks During Protests
Guram Macharashvili, a member of the Georgian parliament‘s majority, thinks that people who wear masks during protests are trying to break the law.
Macharashvili said that if someone is protesting something in public, their goal should be for everyone to hear them. If they’re wearing a mask, it’s hard to know who is speaking out. In this case, he asks, “What is their purpose?” He thinks it’s good news that the government plans to ban masks during protests.
The ruling party, Georgian Dream, also wants to control pyrotechnics (explosives). They plan to make new rules about how these items are sold and used. Some of these changes will start on February 1, 2025, while others will take effect on April 1. The goal is to prevent people from using fireworks during demonstrations.
As a result, protesters won’t be allowed to have pyrotechnics with them during demonstrations. These items will also be banned along with guns, explosives, flammable substances, radioactive materials, and cold weapons.
