The Democratic candidate for the November elections pledged to continue supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression in an interview with 60 Minutes.
“Right Now, we are defending Ukraine’s ability to defend themselves against Russian unprovoked aggressory,” Harris said. She suggested that Russia would be in Kyiv already if Donald Trump, her Republican opponent, was the president.
Ukraine applied for NATO membership on September 20, 2022, but has not received a formal invitation because major players such as the U.S.A. and Germany are reluctant to fully support the step.
Despite high hopes in Kyiv the last two allied Summits have only brought new steps towards deepening Ukraine’s cooperation with NATO and a declaration declaring that the country‘s path to membership is “irreversible.”
The Wall Street Journal reported on October 12 that the allies may offer more “concrete” steps on Ukraine’s entry at the upcoming Ramstein Summit, but they will still fall short of what Kyiv asked for.
While the Biden administration was hesitant about the issue of Ukraine’s inclusion, those close to Trump spoke out more openly in opposition.
JD Vance said that Trump’s peace proposal could include Kyiv giving up its NATO aspirations, and creating a demilitarized zone between Ukraine and Russia.
Robert Fico, the prime minister of Slovakia, said recently that he would also block Ukraine’s entry. All 32 members would have to agree unanimously on the accession.
