Helsinki Commission: Georgian government must honor its obligation to hold free and fair elections

The Helsinki Commission of the released a statement regarding the upcoming Georgian elections on October 17. The Commission called on Georgian honor their obligations to their and citizens by holding and free elections.”
The statement reads, “The government’s autoritarian trajectory threatens Georgia’s democratic destiny and its people’s deeply rooted ambitions.” It also states, “Over the past few decades, the Georgian people have demonstrated their commitment towards democracy and the rule-of-.” The Georgian people deserve to have a government who respects their democratic to choose their leaders. The Georgian government should honor its obligations to the country and its citizens by holding fair and free elections, monitored by independent observers, and allowing political opposition as it has for years.
The statement was signed by U.S. Helsinki Commission Chairman Rep. Joe Wilson, Ranking Member Rep. Steve Cohen, Commissioner Rep. Richard Hudson, Commissioner Rep. Marc Veasey, and Executive Branch Commissioner Assistant Sec. of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Dafna Rand.
