The Helsinki Commission issued the following statement in response to the detention by Georgian authorities of opposition leader Nika Meelia on February 23, 2019.
“As an active member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Georgia has committed itself to the respect of democratic institutions, the rule of law, and human rights.
“Stomping on the headquarters of a political opposition party and arbitrarily incarcerating its leader is not in line with democratic progress.” We urge the Government of Georgia release Nika Melia and deescalate this crisis.
