Historic Event in Kragujevac: A Lesson from the Past?
A gathering of students took place on Saturday in Kragujevac. The event was held to mark Serbia’s Statehood Day. According to historian Milan St. Protic, this is a moment that should remind people of a similar situation two centuries ago.
Two Centuries Ago…
Protic explained that back then, the Constitution of Sretenje was adopted to limit Prince Milos’ power. However, it was suspended because he refused to accept limitations on his authority. This decision has significant implications for today’s society, Protic noted.
A Similar Situation Today?
The historian stressed that Serbia currently has a Constitution that clearly outlines who is in charge and what their powers are. Despite this, the government often disregards these rules, making decisions without respecting the established limits.
Student Protests
There have been ongoing student protests for three months now, but the government seems indifferent to them. The students’ efforts have been dismissed as insignificant by those in power. Protic praised the students for their determination and organization, saying “Hats off to these young people.”
A Lesson from the Past?
Protic reflected on how previous protests in 1996 and 1997 were different from the current student-led movement. He noted that this is a pure student protest, which explains its magnitude.
Responsibility
The historian expected the elders to protect the students from the beginning if necessary. He believed it was the responsibility of the opposition, among others, to take care of the young protesters. Unfortunately, Protic feels that “us seniors failed the exam.”
