**Ukraine Stops Russian Gas Transit**
As of January 1, Ukraine has stopped transporting Russian natural gas through its territory. The Ministry of Energy said this was done for “national security interests”. This decision follows Ukraine’s choice not to renew a five-year transit agreement with Russia‘s Gazprom that ended in 2019.

The EU has been preparing for this eventuality by diversifying its energy sources and increasing capacity for liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from other regions. Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said Russia will lose markets and suffer financial losses.
