Mike Johnson suggested that the outcome of the Ukraine-Russia conflict could be determined by the US presidential election in 2024. Johnson suggested that if reelected, former President Trump would be able to end the Ukraine-Russia conflict quickly. This is in contrast to his view that the war under a Harris administration would likely continue.
According to Punchbowl News, US House Speaker Mike Johnson stated in a recent interview that he was less interested in funding the war effort of Ukraine against Russia.
Johnson’s changing stance on Ukraine assistance comes at a crucial time, as the war shows no signs of slowing down. The House Speaker delayed a bill for military aid to Ukraine earlier this year by opposing a Senate package that combined aid for Ukraine with Israel and Taiwan. Although he passed the bill, which included $61 billion in support for Ukraine at a critical time in its war with Russia, it weakened Ukraine’s military position and hampered military operations.
According to Punchbowl News, Johnson’s current position appears to be changing.
“I don’t want to see Ukraine funded further, and I hope that it is not necessary,” he said.
Johnson’s views about the resolution of the conflict are linked to the upcoming US Presidential election. He expressed his belief that a Trump presidency would bring the conflict to an end quickly.
Johnson, on the other hand, expressed concern about a possible Harris administration’s ability to continue the war.
He said: “If Kamala Harris becomes president, it’s not the end. That’s a desperate, dangerous scenario.”
Republicans for Ukraine is a human-rights group that has given Johnson a “F”, indicating he does not support Ukraine. Some human rights activists have characterized his statements as anti-Ukrainian.
Trump has avoided directly supporting Ukraine in the war. When asked if Trump wants Ukraine to win in debates or interviews, Trump often emphasizes that the conflict will be settled within 24 hour if he was president again. He has said that he would try to reach a deal with Russia in order to end the fighting without committing to Ukraine’s win.
Zelenskyy claimed that during his recent visit to the US, to present the Ukrainian victory plan, he met Trump, and that he had promised to support Ukraine if re-elected.
Kamala Harris, on the other hand, is a strong supporter of Ukraine and has defended Biden’s administration’s extensive military aid to Kyiv. She accused Trump during debates of being willing abandon Ukraine. She argued that his quick-resolution approach would mean giving into Russian aggression.
Harris has stressed the importance of providing Ukraine with advanced weapons, such as air defenses, tanks, and believes that continued US assistance is crucial for both Ukraine’s security and that of Europe. She warns that if Ukraine is not supported, Russia may be emboldened to target other countries like Poland.
As part of Ukraine’s strategy for strengthening its defense through Western allies, the Ukrainian President announced that he would intensify efforts to finalize a bi-lateral security agreement with the US.
