**Ukraine‘s Cultural Heritage Under Attack**
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to the destruction of many cultural landmarks. This is not just a coincidence, but part of a plan to erase Ukrainian identity.
**Seven World Heritage Sites Damaged or Destroyed**
Since UNESCO was founded in 1945, seven Ukrainian sites have been added to its list of globally important places. However, even these sites haven’t been spared from Russian aggression. Some have been completely destroyed, while others are still at risk.
**1,096 Cultural Sites Lost**
The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Information Policy reports that 1,096 cultural sites have been lost since the invasion began in November 2024. UNESCO estimates that the damage to Ukraine’s heritage sites is around $2.4 billion.
**UNESCO Steps In**
Despite international pressure, Russia continues to attack Ukrainian cultural sites. The UN’s World Heritage Committee has listed three major historical landmarks as endangered, but this hasn’t stopped Russian attacks. Just six months after being added to the list, Odesa’s historic center was hit by a Russian attack, damaging museums and the 18th-century Transfiguration Cathedral.
