**Russia Holds 301 Ukrainian Women Captive**
Human rights groups have confirmed that at least 301 Ukrainian women are being held captive by Russia. Most of them were taken during the full-scale war.
According to Olha Skrypnyk, Head of the Crimean Human Rights Group, 27 women were unlawfully detained before the war began in 2022. However, a total of 276 women were imprisoned after the invasion started.
**Reports of Torture and Abuse**
Human rights organizations have condemned Russia’s treatment of these captives. They claim that evidence shows systematic torture and abuse in detention facilities. The international community is calling for concrete steps to be taken to secure the release of these civilians and hold Russia accountable.
**Challenging Confirmation**
Confirming cases of women being held captive is difficult because Russia refuses to provide information about civilian detainees. Skrypnyk said that the number of women taken captive after 24 February 2022 is 11 times greater than before the invasion.
**Criminal Prosecution**
Russia has initiated 26 cases of criminal prosecution against women since the occupation of Crimea in 2014. Currently, five women are held in penal colonies, four are in pre-trial detention centers, and another four are under restrictions or probation. Dozens more have been documented as being subjected to administrative persecution.
