Hungary’s Foreign Minister Visits Russia, Eyes Economic Cooperation
Hungary’s foreign minister has visited Russia for the 13th time in three years. This is more visits than any other EU diplomat and even some of Russia’s closest allies.
Hungary is seen as a country that is friendly to Moscow within both the EU and NATO. Hungary has blocked aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia several times.
The foreign minister, Szijjarto, praised Hungary’s energy ties with Russia. He said that an agreement was reached to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. This is in the interest of Hungary, as its energy security depends on Moscow.
Szijjarto also commented on the meetings on Facebook. He praised the record amount of natural gas imported from Russia last year. He said that energy attacks are unacceptable and praised current ceasefire efforts.
The foreign minister agreed with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak to maintain energy cooperation. He said that attacks on Hungary’s energy infrastructure are unacceptable.
Ukraine has already agreed to a 30-day ceasefire if Russia agrees to the same terms. However, Russia has refused this offer despite agreeing to a ceasefire proposal from US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.
Russia continues to launch aerial attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The country has launched over 30 mass strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in three years.
