Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili Met with Hungarian Counterpart
Last week, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili visited Hungary. She met with her counterpart, Péter Szijjártó. They held a joint press conference.
Hungary’s Government Supports Georgia
During the meeting, Hungary confirmed that it would block any EU initiative to sanction Georgian officials. Secretary of State Zoltán Kovács said this on Twitter. He quoted Foreign Minister Szijjártó as saying that Hungary will veto sanctions targeting Georgia’s interior minister and police chiefs.
Hungary Backs Georgia’s Election
Foreign Minister Szijjártó praised Georgia’s recent election victory. He criticized the “liberal mainstream” for questioning the election’s legitimacy. He said it was hypocritical to do so, especially since they would have applauded if the opposition had won.
Georgia Wants Respect from EU
Minister Botchorishvili expressed hope that the issue of Georgia would be discussed objectively at a meeting of EU leaders on December 16. She also expressed concern about pressure on election observers and efforts not to recognize the recent elections as legitimate.
