reports that is actively negotiating additional gas supplies with Russia’s Gazprom in 2025. Peter Szijjarto, of Foreign Affairs, told Russia’s RIA Agency on 15 October. This comes after Hungary signed an agreement to supply additional gas volumes at competitive rates for the last quarter .
Russia has weaponized its gas supply to exert pressure on for years, using strategies such as reducing flow rates and increasing prices. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on a large scale, the Kremlin cut off gas supplies in order to force the EU to make favorable political decisions. This tactic backfired as the EU reduced its dependence on Russian gas through diversifying its resources. The EU sanctions against Russia include an import ban for all Russian crude oil and petroleum products. Hungary is the most pro Russian EU member state.
