**Massive Drone and Missile Assault by Russia on Ukraine Leaves Dozens Injured**
On the night of May 23-24, Russia launched a massive drone and missile assault on Ukraine, causing widespread damage and injuring dozens of people. The attack targeted several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, with the aim of weakening Ukraine’s resistance and disrupting daily life.
The large-scale assault involved 14 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and 250 Shahed-type strike drones launched from Russian territories, including occupied Crimea. Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted 6 ballistic missiles over Kyiv and neutralized 245 enemy drones across the country. Of the destroyed drones, 128 were shot down by fire weapons while 117 were electronically suppressed or lost.
The attack caused significant damage to residential buildings, shopping centers, educational institutions, and cars in several districts of Kyiv. Fifteen people were injured in the capital, with some requiring evacuation due to fires breaking out in their apartments. In one incident, a married couple was injured when drone debris flew into their fifth-floor apartment.
In Kharkiv Oblast, six settlements experienced attacks during the previous 24-hour period, resulting in multiple civilian casualties. Four people were killed and eight others injured across several communities. The bombardment also caused significant infrastructure damage, with private homes, municipal buildings, and vehicles damaged or destroyed.
**A Coordinated Attack**
Ukrainian authorities described this as one of the most massive combined attacks by Russian forces. “The enemy is improving its own drone tactics, simultaneously striking with ballistics,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv Military Administration.
This attack highlights Russia’s continued use of diverse weaponry, including drones and missiles, to target Ukrainian cities and civilians. The tactic aims to create chaos and disrupt daily life, making it difficult for Ukraine to maintain its resistance.
**A Blow to Peace Negotiations**
The massive assault comes as the Trump administration attempts to negotiate a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. US President Donald Trump initially claimed that Vladimir Putin wants peace but then stated the opposite, saying that Putin believes he is winning the war.
This development raises concerns about the sincerity of Russia’s commitment to peace negotiations. As Ukraine continues to face these attacks, it remains uncertain whether Russia is genuinely interested in finding a peaceful solution or if this is simply a tactic to further weaken Ukraine’s position.
**A Humanitarian Crisis**
The attack has left many civilians and their homes injured, with some requiring evacuation due to fires breaking out in their apartments. The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to worsen, with many civilians struggling to access basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.
As the situation on the ground becomes increasingly dire, it is essential that international leaders take a strong stance against Russia’s aggressive actions and provide necessary support to Ukraine in its efforts to maintain its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
