**Ukraine Loses Large Areas of Territory to Russia in 2024**
In 2024, Ukraine lost control over more than 3,600 square kilometers of territory. Russian forces were able to capture up to 20 square kilometers per day during their most aggressive advances.
The biggest losses happened in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions. In one area, Russian troops took over more than 2,400 square kilometers, pushing deep into Ukrainian-held territory. This has brought the front line close to the border with Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
**Key Areas of Loss**
* Over 2,400 square kilometers in Velika Novosilka–Ocheretyne sector
* At least 335 square kilometers in New York–Siversk area (exact numbers are hard to verify)
* 479 square kilometers on the Lyman and Kupiansk fronts
* Approximately 95 square kilometers in Kherson Oblast
**Ukraine’s Response**
Despite setbacks, Ukraine was able to regain some areas. For example, Ukrainian forces took back control of 5 square kilometers near Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia.
**Looking Ahead**
Analysts predict that Russia will continue to try and capture key cities such as Kurakhove, Toretsk, and Chasiv Yar in Donetsk Oblast. They also expect potential amphibious operations along the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast.
