Ukraine’s Electricity Imports Soar
Ukraine imported a record 4.4 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity in 2024, according to data from ExPro consulting company.
Russia has been bombing Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since late 2022. The attacks have caused major problems with power supply and led to rolling blackouts across the country. In some areas, people had to go without electricity for up to 20 hours a day.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, is also occupied by Russia. This has put more pressure on Ukraine’s remaining nuclear power plants, which supply two-thirds of the country’s electricity.
Most of Ukraine’s electricity imports came from Hungary (39%), followed by Slovakia (23%), Romania (18%), and Poland (14%).
Ukraine became a net importer of electricity in 2024, with only 366,000 MWh being exported. Experts are worried that disrupting power to Ukraine’s remaining nuclear power plants could cause safety risks.
The International Monetary Fund estimates that Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s power grid have caused $56.5 billion in damage by mid-2024.
