**Russia Labels Ukraine Main Source of Extremism**
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree naming Ukraine as the main source of extremism in Russia. The updated anti-extremism strategy also introduces the concept of “Russophobia” for the first time.
According to the document, Ukraine poses a serious threat to Russia and repeats claims about neo-Nazi activity among Ukrainians. It alleges that radical groups receive support from external forces to commit crimes on Russian territory.
**What is Russophobia?**
The strategy defines Russophobia as an unfriendly attitude towards Russian citizens, language, and culture. It says this includes aggressive sentiments and actions by individuals or political forces, as well as discriminatory actions by foreign authorities.
**Crackdown on Dissent**
Russia has used claims of extremism to crack down on various organizations, including news outlets, social media platforms, and the international LGBT movement. The Kremlin is also considering blocking WhatsApp due to alleged violations.
In 2024, Russia designated a record 65 organizations as “undesirable,” exposing members and employees to prosecution.
**Ukraine Responds**
Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, said that despite Russian attempts to destroy their energy system during the war, they have won another victory on the energy front. President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced personnel decisions, including changes to aid packages for Ukraine.
