Russia Reduces Barges Protecting Crimean Bridge
Russia has cut in half the number of barges deployed to protect its Crimean Bridge. This bridge is important for Russian forces.
The Center of Journalistic Investigations reported on December 10 that only 18 barges were left in the Kerch Strait by December 8. One month earlier, there were 34 barges.
The barges are part of a system to keep Ukrainian drones from attacking the bridge. Ukraine has attacked the bridge several times before.
Recent satellite images show that some of the old barriers have been damaged. In September, strong winds washed away parts of the barriers.
The Crimean Bridge is very long, at 19 kilometers. It connects Russia’s mainland to Crimea, a region it occupies illegally since 2014. The bridge has suffered damage in previous attacks by Ukraine.
Ukraine and Russia are fighting over the bridge in court. This case is being heard at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
