**Syria Demands Compensation from Russia**
Syria’s new government has asked Russia for compensation and to correct “past mistakes”. This comes after the ouster of former leader Bashar al-Assad in December.
Russia supported Assad’s regime during its crackdown on anti-government forces. The regime imprisoned, tortured, and killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians. Assad now lives in Moscow.
A Russian delegation met with Syria’s de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa to discuss compensation and reconstruction. The talks were described as “constructive” by Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
**Russia Faces Pressure**
Russia is currently suffering heavy casualties on the battlefield, losing around 1500-1750 soldiers daily. Ukraine has also been engaging with Syria’s new leadership, sharing similar views on Russia’s military presence in the country.
**Global Sanctions**
The US and EU have imposed sanctions on Russia for its actions in Ukraine. These sanctions will cut off more Russian banks from the SWIFT banking system and target additional vessels suspected of being part of Russia’s “shadow-fleet”.
**Ongoing Conflict**
Russia is still involved in a conflict with Ukraine, with ongoing drone strikes across several regions. The Lukoil oil depot in Kstovo was targeted by four drones, causing significant damage.
