Heavy Snowfall Hits Guria Region
The Guria region in Georgia has been affected by heavy snowfall. The Mayor of Lanchkhuti Municipality, Aleksandre Sarishvili, said that evacuations were necessary in several areas due to the bad weather.
Mr. Sarishvili told Interpressnews that all municipal services are working in emergency mode to deal with the issues quickly. He said that 20 units of equipment are being used to clear roads, but the snow is falling so heavily that the cleared roads are getting covered again.
Many people have been affected by the heavy snowfall. Some houses have collapsed, and residents have been evacuated from several areas. Some have been moved into hotels or with relatives. Several villages are without electricity, and teams from ‘Energo-Pro Georgia’ are working to fix this problem.
Schools and childcare centers in Lanchkhuti Municipality have been closed until Thursday. Mr. Sarishvili said that all municipal services are involved in the cleanup efforts, including rescue teams who are working on-site.
The Mayor of Chokhatauri Municipality, Davit Sharashenidze, also reported problems due to the heavy snowfall. He said that central roads are being cleared and that educational and childcare activities have been suspended for two days.
Mr. Sharashenidze told Interpressnews that the team is working hard to clear the central roads in all villages by the end of the day. After this, they will move on to clearing internal roads.
