**Russian Attacks on Ukraine Cause Casualties and Damage**
Over the past day, Russian attacks against Ukraine have killed nine people and injured at least 38 others. This is according to regional authorities who spoke on January 17.
**Ukrainian Forces Repel Drone Attack**
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that they downed 24 out of 39 drones launched by Russia overnight. The drones included Shahed-type attack drones, which are known for their ability to evade air defenses. Another 14 drones disappeared from radar without causing any damage. These decoy drones are often used alongside real drones to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses.
**Missile Attack Causes Damage and Loss of Life**
On January 18, Russia launched four ballistic missiles at Ukraine. Two of the missiles were downed by Ukrainian forces, while the other two caused significant damage. The attack on Kyiv damaged several buildings, including a water pipeline, an administrative building, and a business center. Four people were killed in the attack, with three others injured.
**Other Cities Hit**
Russian attacks also targeted the city of Zaporizhzhia, partially destroying an industrial facility. At least 10 people were injured in the attack. In Kryvyi Rih, five people were killed and 19 others injured, including four children. The attack damaged several high-rise buildings and an educational institution.
**Regional Governor Reports on Damage**
In Kherson Oblast, Russian forces targeted 31 settlements, including the regional center of Kherson. One person was killed and five others injured in the attacks.
