India has announced the release of Indian nationals who were allegedly recruited by Russia’s army under false pretenses. There are ongoing efforts to free 20 more.
India TV News reported that Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri announced on 21st October that the country has successfully secured the release for 85 citizens who had been deceptively recruited to the Russian Army. Diplomatic efforts are still underway for the remaining 20.
At least eight people have died in combat against Ukraine. In a desperate attempt to recruit more soldiers after losing soldiers in Ukraine Russia entices foreign civilians including Indians into combat roles with promises of well-paid positions that are not combat. As part of Russia’s larger effort to strengthen its forces, this recruitment drive targets economically challenged nations such as Nepal and Central Asian Countries. India, a long-standing ally of Russia has not condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Misri, during a press conference in New Delhi, detailed the ongoing efforts of the government to secure the release from Russian military service of all Indian citizens.
