International observers held a recent meeting in relation to the parliamentary election of Georgia which took place yesterday. They highlighted important issues regarding the validity of the process and the outcome.
Pascal Allizard, of the OSCE, mentioned reports of pressure being applied to voters and public officials. This raised suspicions as to whether citizens were able peacefully vote without fear of repercussions.
A PACE representative brought up cases of voter bribery, multiple voting and other serious irregularities at the polling station.
A member of the NATO parliament assembly said that these elections were a turning-point for Georgia in proving its democracy. They revealed pressure and a lack freedom for voters.
The head of the European Parliament delegacy voiced criticism towards the ruling party for their anti-Western campaigns, alerting that these practices could weaken the democracy after the election.
