Journalists Attacked in Georgia
The International Press Institute (IPI) has strongly condemned the violent attacks on journalists during protests in Georgia. The organization is worried about the growing violence against journalists, both by police and private individuals.
Since November 28, at least 90 journalists have been hurt while covering the protests. Many of them work for independent or government-critical outlets based in Tbilisi. Police have also used force to disperse protesters, making it hard for journalists to do their job.
IPI says that government campaigns to discredit independent journalism are also getting worse. The organization praises Georgia’s free media for continuing to report on the situation despite these challenges.
A joint statement from IPI and other organizations expresses solidarity with Georgian journalists. They say that the work of these journalists is essential for informing both Georgians and the world about what is happening.
IPI is worried about the state of press freedom in Georgia, where laws and institutions are being used to silence critical voices. Despite this, they are inspired by the bravery and resilience of Georgian journalists.
The statement is signed by 80 members of IPI’s network.
