Georgian Prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused the opposition of not filling Freedom Square during the “Georgia Chooses the European Union march” by using old footage including clips from Georgian Dream rallys to cover up the low attendance.
Kobakhidze claimed that the opposition had already “lost the elections” because they could not gather enough supporters. He said that the situation was evidence of the opposition’s declining influence and their inability to engage the public.
“The opposition is in a bad situation.” They can’t even hold meetings. Yesterday, they brought Salome Zurabishvili but still couldn’t fill Freedom Square.”
Kobakhidze responded by accusing the media that they were using old footage of previous rallies including Georgian Dream events to exaggerate the attendance numbers.
“In order for us to cover up our failure, we distributed footage of previous actions, including ours. The rally failed because you couldn’t fill Freedom Square. In fact, the radical opposition had lost the elections just a week before.”
Kobakhidze warned the public of possible provocations during the election but assured that the state will be vigilant to prevent disruptions.
“The state is vigilant and we will do all that we can to ensure there is no provocation.”
